What does it mean to be a disciple?
- To be a follower of Jesus.
- Take His teachings to heart.
- To share those teachings with others.
Our faith ancestors the Israelites received the commandments from God on how to follow Him. They are given a clear description of how to live God’s word when the Israelites are told to, “keep these commands on your heart, recite them to your children when you are at home and on a road trip, when you wake up and when you tuck them in at night, wear my words on your body as a reminder," (Deuteronomy 6).
Then Jesus comes along and tells his disciples, “let the children come to me,” to have faith like a child, to baptize in His name, to make disciples of all nations, to celebrate in communion with each other.
Martin Luther helped translate the Bible into language the common people understood and wrote the Small Catechism so parents could teach their own children about the Christian faith and what it means to be a disciple, a follower of Jesus Christ.
